Investment banks were kept busy by the sheer volume of long-delayed transactions made possible during 3rd qtr 1998 when world stock prices staged a rally. Investment bankers had it so good starting from Oct 19, 1998 with the announcement of four American transactions worth $25 billion to British Petroleum and Amoco's $110 billion merger in late 1998. Investment banks cite a number of factors ranging from globalization, the single European market and deflation to explain corporate consolidation in finance, crude oil, pharmaceuticals and the telecommunications markets.
