The high-tech bubble may have burst in March, but telecoms and media deals still dominate our list of the leading cross-border transactions announced in the first half of the year. Four of the top five fit into that category.

And it looks like continuing that way - judging by the flow of new announcements since the quarter end. Canada's acquisition-minded JDS Uniphase has agreed a $36bn merger with California's SDL (both companies are leaders in optical communications network equipment); Sprint looks a target for any number of telecoms players after the failure of its proposed merger with Worldcom; and the omnivorous Deutsche Telekom is one of a number of potential buyers for US mobile...
