In theory it should have been a godsend, a marriage made in heaven. The Internet and the payment card -- a perfect match. Why? Because the internet is an environment which depends on electronic payment. It is an environment which typically sells high-ticket items to high net worth individuals, so will support premium pricing. And it is an environment which, by definition, entails plenty of ambient technology which can be marshalled together, making transactions more secure than they are in the physical world.
