Since the release of the first draft in January 2001, the road to Basel II has been a long and bumpy one with intensive lobbying and debate by banks, politicians and other market participants. So far, there have been four revisions and several extended delays to the implementation schedule - the most recent of which, in May this year, postponed implementation of the advanced approaches for credit risk and operational risk to the end of 2007. However, despite the continued wrangling, the new Basel Accord is to be released as The Banker goes to print, largely unchanged from the draft released in May 2003.
