Lean Manufacturing Helps Streamline Production

How would you like to cut your production costs by 50 percent? This is the kind of success claimed for Lean Manufacturing, also known simply as "Lean."

Lean is a systematic approach to improving productivity by streamlining work flow and eliminating waste. It's been around in some form since the invention of the assembly line.

"After World War II, Toyota was looking for ways to improve their operations," said Jerry Biser, who conducts Lean trainings for the West Virginia Manufacturing Extension Partnership. "They came over and studied Ford and GM and came up with the Toyota Production System."

While American automobile manufacturers abandoned the ideas over time, Biser said, Japanese manufacturers honed their system to a science.
