Waste Management's Landfill Bind Prompts Meeting with PSC

MARTINSBURG - As trash stacked up along streets and roadways in Berkeley County earlier this summer, it looked as if Waste Management of Shenandoah Valley would get what it wanted: the go-ahead for higher limits on the landfill it owns in Hedgesville.

But the solution emerging now is quite different, and certainly better for Panhandle residents and business owners, two local lawmakers say.

When Panhandle leaders meet next week with the state Public Service Commission in Charleston, they likely will emerge with plans that not only retain local control of trash issues but also introduce competition.
