ELEANOR - Open the hood of many new Chrysler, Toyota or General Motors vehicle, and chances are pretty good the ignition coils inside were made in West Virginia.

And chances are, Diamond Electric, a Japanese company with a major plant in Putnam County, made those parts.

Diamond Electric, which arrived in North America in 1992, has only two plants in the United States - one in West Virginia, the other in Michigan. But it's the plant in West Virginia that has seen the most growth recently.

The Eleanor plant opened in 1997 at a price tag of $30 million. Since then, the facility has had two major expansions. The first cost $10 million and came in 2000. The second came just two years later and cost $25 million. With each expansion, the plant has nearly doubled in size,...
