Space Shuttle to Use on FMW Composite's Carrier

FMW Composite Systems of Bridgeport hosted a ceremony this week to commemorate the delivery to NASA of its Super Lightweight Interchangeable Carrier (SLIC), the first resin composite structure qualified for space flight.

The SLIC is to be used on the space shuttle in 2007 to transport equipment to the Hubble Space Telescope, according to Jennifer Morton, spokesperson for FMW.

First launched from the space shuttle Discovery in 1990, the Hubble telescope gives astronomers a clear view of space objects from above the earth's atmosphere. It's about the size of a school bus and completes its low-earth orbit about once every hour and a half, according to the Space Telescope Science Institute.
