Wheeling Hospital Launches New Surgical Procedure

Wheeling Hospital recently became the first medical facility in the Upper Ohio Valley to perform a new thoracic surgical procedure developed to significantly reduce severe complications, mortality rate and recovery time.

Dr. Ahmad Rahbar performed the new thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery on 78-year-old Thomas Winland of Brilliant, Ohio. Given Winland's medical history, he would have faced far greater risks from surgery had the more traditional surgical method been used.

Rabbar said the new procedure significantly reduces patient mortality rates - from 6 percent to just 2 percent. It also lessens the risk of paralysis from 15 percent for traditional surgeries to less than 2 percent with the new method - and cuts blood loss by 80 percent, thereby requiring little or no...
