His story: Pete Knapp, an Akron, Ohio, native, received his bachelor's degree in architecture from Ohio State University in 1997. After graduating, he served four years active duty in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer officer.

In 2001, he returned to civilian life and also joined the West Virginia National Guard. He started his career with Cintas as a service manager at the Ashland, Ky., facility, He was promoted to branch manager at the Charleston facility in 2002 but was deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
