Cabot Corp. Will Close Waverly Site In 2008

Cabot Corp. will close its Waverly carbon black plant in 2008, putting 48 workers there out of work.

Paul Fraser, the Waverly plant general manager, said the closing is the result of an oversupply of carbon black in United States markets triggered by the exodus of domestic tire manufacturing capacity to Asia Pacific countries, including China and those in South America.

Carbon black, a mixture of partially burned hydrocarbons produced by partial combustion of natural gas, is used as a black pigment for inks and paints, as well as in the production of vulcanized rubber for the tire industry.

Fraser said six domestic tire-manufacturing operations shifted to over-seas locations during the past 18 months.
