NYLON INJECTION MANIFOLD FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE BMW

High Performance Plastics, January, 1991

The 1991 BMW 525i is believed to be the first car in the world to have an intake manifold made from injection moulded thermoplastics. The choice of BASF's Ultramid' nylon 66 resin for this component reduces weight, improves engine performance and cuts manufacturing costs, it is reported. The engine of the new BMW has four valves per cylinder and six cylinders, but the use of nylon for the manifold keeps the engine weight down to 195 kg, which is only 12 kg more than the weight of BMW's current two-valve engine. The manifold itself weighs only about 2.3 kg - about half the weight of an equivalent pressure-cast aluminium manifold. Glassfibre-reinforced nylon was chosen for its ability to withstand high temperatures - up to 130 degrees C - and vibrational stresses as well as...
