PHTHALATES: EU DECIDES NOT TO DECIDE.

The Emergency Product Safety Committee of the European Union has deferred taking a decision on the recommendation from the European Commission that an emergency ban should be imposed on the use of phthalate plasticizers in soft PVC products used by babies and young children, such as teething rings.

The European Council of Plasticisers and Intermediates (ECPI) has welcomed the decision. Director Dr David Cadogan said: "Any such ban would be totally unjustified. For the Member States the only sensible decision was to wait and get further clarification from the CSTEE (the EU Scientific Committee for Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment)".
