Carbon fibre sled.(APPLICATIONS)

B3 Technologies Ltd, UK, has developed an FRP sled for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), the sled was designed with assistance from former World Cup champion Kristen Bromley, who is currently ranked fourth in the world.

Also known as a "tray", the sled uses a four-ply lay up of 0/90/90/0 degrees and a nominal thickness of 1.75 mm. The prepregs used have carbon fibres woven into a 2 x 2 twill weave, impregnated in an epoxy resin matrix.

A feature of the design is the way the tray reacts with the main metal chassis. Steering is accomplished by distorting the chassis, so the interaction between the tray on which the rider lies and the metal structure is critical.
