European plastic surface treatment project.(ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES)

Rapra Technology, UK, has secured some [euro]560 000 of European Union (EU) funding on behalf of a European consortium to lead the development of a novel hexavalent chrome free environmentally sustainable pre-treatment for plating on plastic.

The Ecosam Project is supported by the European Commission and is based on technology that allows the electrolytic deposition of metal layers directly on a range of plastic substrates. This means there is no need for the use of the carcinogen, hexavalent chrome, in the chemical etching.

More than [euro]1 million will be committed to the cooperative research project by companies from across the EU, and will be supported through the European Commissions Sixth Framework.
