Messier's resignation could prompt Canal Plus sell-off.

Canal Plus, the French satellite pay-TV platform, could be sold off following the resignation of chairman Jean-Marie Messier from parent company Vivendi Universal, according to Reuters.

Reporting on speculation by industry analysts, the news wire wrote that Messier's resignation could provoke the debt-laden Franco-American media conglomerate to sell its core assets - with Canal Plus topping the list.

French newspaper Le Monde previously reported that Vivendi's French and US assets would likely be sold off separately if the company was to be broken up, with Canal suited to French investors.
