Intel, Nokia, Fujistu, and others found WiMax forum to support 802.16.(Brief Article)

Intel, Fujitsu, Proxim, Nokia, Airspan Networks, Alvarion Ltd, Aperto Networks, Ensemble Communications Inc, OFDM Forum and Wi-LAN Inc., have joined together to found the WiMax Forum, a non-profit association aimed at supporting 802.16, a new high-speed wireless internet standard that allows connections over a 50km range.

The Forum will start discussions on an industry standard for 802.16 equipment.

The group says it does not aim to replace the 802.11b (Wi-fi) standard or DSL, merely to support the technology, which it believes can offer a more affordable last mile in rural and other areas that have no high-speed internet connection.
