Consumer demands and improved options are making non-leaded plumbing systems a reality.
The use of lead in water systems dates back to the Roman Empire when it was used to produce piping in 10-foot lengths for the empire's water supply systems. Roman engineers chose lead over other alternatives because of its unique physical properties -- corrosion resistance, softness, malleability and strength.
Modern-day discoveries of Roman-built lead pipes in Italy and England, still in excellent condition, are evidence of the metal's widespread use and durability. In fact, lead has been so commonly used in water systems throughout history that the modern word plumber and the element's symbol, Pb, are derived from the Latin word for lead, plumbum.
