IRS audit coverage in '97.

IRS audit coverage will be lower in '97, reversing a recent trend that has seen IRS auditing increasingly larger percentages of tax returns, cresting at 1.63% last year. IRS has fewer resources, and some auditors are being shifted to assist taxpayers during the current filing season.
And IRS won't revive its feared line-by-line audits this year... the Taxpayer Compliance Measurement Program. The Service used the data from TCMP audits to develop formulas for picking which returns to audit. In '95, IRS dropped plans to do 153,000 TCMP audits after Congress balked.
But Internal Revenue wants to resume TCMP audits in a few years... formulas for selecting returns will be outdated, according to gov't brass.
