Threatening her ex-spouse with an audit cost an IRS agent her job. An IRS auditor and her ex disagreed over who would take exemptions for their children. She left him a phone message saying that his returns would be audited if he didn't OK her proposed division of the exemptions.
Dismissal is mandatory if an IRS employee threatens an audit for personal gain, an Appeals Court says (James v. Tablerion, Fed. Cir.). Other offenses that require automatic firing include perjury, assault, violating a taxpayer's constitutional rights and improper asset seizures. This rule was adopted in a 1998 law that was created to curb IRS abuses.
