In-flight Entertainment (IFE) has reached a new level os sophistication with the deployment of video-on-demand systems. One high bandwidth system, Rockwell Collins' P@ssport, incorporates a fiberoptic backbone, expanded beam fiberoptic interconnects, an ATM switch, and a downstream copper distribution system via FireWire cables. The system makes possible a variety of passenger entertainment amenities, including Internet access.

The optical digital signals originate at the system's servers, traveling on the fiber backbone.

Downstream the path converts to a FireWire distribution network that takes the signals to electronics boxes at individual passenger seats. The technology has operated for more than a year in commercial aircraft with out failure,...
