Corning Cable Systems recently introduced its new network interface device (NID), an all-plastic enclosure specifically designed to house active components for the growing fiber-to-the-home and broadband access markets. Placement of active electronics in a NID outside a subscriber's home allows service providers to access the equipment at all hours without having to schedule an appointment with the subscriber, consistent with current telco and CATV business models.

The NID incorporates a fusion splice tray and up to three meters of fiberoptic cable slack storage. Bottom and rear-entry access points are provided for ease of cable installation.
