Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) is to launch high-speed wireless Internet service based on Wi-fi and Wi Max technologies in the next nine months. The company will soon float a tender for the equipment. Wi-fi provides wireless Internet coverage within 500 meters, with a small hotspot, while Wi Max has a maximum range of 10-20 km.

BSNL's high-speed Internet connections will be launched in 10 cities, including four metros, within the next nine months. BSNL plans to complete its service offerings by providing high-speed wireless Internet access and would set up Wi-fi hotspots, initially around 400-500, at airports, hotels, university campuses and other public places.
