Researchers are digging into biofuels at a fast and furious pace.

Some of the most promising developments:A new processing system for ethanol, designed at Purdue University. It uses heat and an extruder to liquefy the cornstarch, producing a different set of by-products... corn oil, gluten meal, fiber and others...than the current processes do. What's more, research shows the system can slash processing time in half, reduce the use of water and power and curb odor and air pollution. New varieties of barley with enzymes that produce more sugar... a boon to brewers, as well as potentially useful for ethanol production.

And possible new biomass crops. Guayule, a drought-hardy crop...
