Reilly Tar and Chemical site clean-up:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Reilly Industries Inc. have signed a clean-up agreement for the 121-acre (49 ha) Reilly Tar and Chemical Superfund site in Indiana. The firm operated a coal tar refinery and creosote wood treatment plant at the site from 1921-72. It still operates several chemical plants synthesizing compounds from coal tar bases.

Company operations have contaminated soil and ground water: a plume containing benzene, ammonia and pyridines has migrated off site. Clean-up costs may exceed $6 million and will cover five former on-site disposal areas which contain soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds.
