Clean-up for Montrose and Del Amo sites:.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a pump-and-treat clean-up plan for ground water contaminated by the Montrose Chemical and Del Amo Superfund sites. The ground water is contaminated with chlorobenzene, benzene and other chemicals from the former Montrose Chemical plant which manufactured the insecticide DDT from 1947-1982, and the former Del Amo plant which manufactured synthetic rubber from 1942-1972.

Where possible, the ground water will be cleaned to drinking water standards and then re-injected into the aquifer. In areas of ground water where restoration is not feasible, both treatment and natural processes will prevent remaining contamination from spreading, says the Agency.
