The U.S. EPA is considering adding benzene alkylation to a list of benzene control technologies that refiners can employ to generate early benzene credits.

The benzene control technologies are so refiners can comply with the Mobile Source Air Toxics rule (MSAT2), which states that refiners and importers of gasoline must have an annual average benzene content of 0.62 volume percent or less, beginning in 2011.
