DOE expanding fossil-fuel initiative. (Trends).(Department of Energy)

In an effort to enhance the nation's economic and energy security through continued use of fossil fuels, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a broad-based solicitation that seeks to expand research and development of coal, oil and natural gas. DOE requested private companies to submit an array of fresh, new technologies and/or approaches that have the potential to revolutionize the way fossil fuels are developed and used.

Depending on available funding, DOE expects to select 50 to 75 projects, which are to run 12 to 36 months. The solicitation asks for research ideas across 13 areas of interest (see table).
