FTSE firmer.

Sentiment underpinned by fresh merger activity Jonas Crosland

Leading shares have shown only modest gains this morning, and by lunchtime the FTSE100 index had risen 26.2 points to stand at 6,611.4. Sentiment in the second liners was less positive however, and the FTSE250 index was down 45.3 points at 11,774. Trading volume was particularly weak at GBP957m, reflecting the start of the school holidays and the absence of many institutional investors.

Shares in Friends Provident jumped 8.1 per cent to 202p, FT.com reports, while Resolution's shares were up 5.4 per cent following confirmation that the two life assurers are in advanced merger discussions that could lead to the creation of a group worth more than GBP8bn.
