Shares retreat from early highs Jonas Crosland
Leading shares in London failed to hold onto early gains, and after adding 75 points to its overnight total at one stage, the FTSE100 index came back to stand at 6,147.4 at lunchtime, a rise of just 15.2 points. Mid-cap stocks were also below their best, and after touching a high of 11,070, the FTSE250 index retreated to 10,962 for a rise of 71 points. Volume once again was disappointing at GBP964m.
Sentiment initially received a boost overnight with the release of a letter by Ben Bernanke, Federal Reserve chairman, FT.Com reports. He said the US central bank was keeping a close eye on financial markets and was "prepared to act as needed" if the economy was threatened.
