The new lows for the year made by the US indices confirm the continuation of the bear market. But along the way, some odd things have happened. On Monday 3 March, the Nasdaq made a new low for the year. On Tuesday 4 March, it fell another 1.5 per cent in early trading and, in so doing, breached its February lows. But it closed up on the day - as if an important chart point had not been breached. Unexpected recoveries are commonplace in bull markets, but rare in bear markets.
