The IRS usually starts churning out refunds by mid January. But the agency says refunds won't start going out until February--at the earliest--because of congressional delays in fixing the alternative minimum tax.

All year long, lawmakers knew they needed to "patch" the AMT to prevent 20 million taxpayers from being slammed by a tax designed in the 1960s to nab a couple of hundred wealthy Americans. But, all year long, Congress dallied.

If you're among the millions of folks with the simplest returns, you may have to wait a bit for your refund check. But if you have a more complicated return, the delay may not matter. Those who are waiting for 1099s from brokers, mutual funds, a limited partnership or an IRA sponsor probably won't notice the slowdown....
