Microsoft to Start Cell Phone Tests.(Stinger smart phone)(Brief Article)

New York, NY--Microsoft will begin consumer tests of a "smart phone" that attempts to squeeze the features of a handheld organizer into a cell phone-sized package, this summer. The company showed the latest prototypes of a cell phone powered by its "Stinger" operating system at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France.

In addition to announcing market trials with wireless carriers such as Vodafone, Microsoft also announced that two new partners, Mitsubishi and Sendo Ltd., will be making phones based on Stinger. The Sendo model will be tested in Europe and Asia; if the trials go well, the phone could go on sale in time for this year's holiday shopping, though much more likely in Europe than in the United States.
