Entering and working in a confined space is simply a dangerous situation, and no matter how experienced your workers are you can't take anything for granted. Familiarity and ignorance breed contempt, and the result is fatalities.

The dangers are many in confined spaces. Organic material decays and generates both methane and hydrogen sulfide. This generation robs the air of oxygen. The vapors of chemicals long since emptied can be toxic or flammable or heavier than air. The top of the pit might be safe and the bottom deadly. Tank trucks turn over and spill gasoline or liquid propane into the sewers. Midnight dumpers place waste-pesticide base down public manholes. And the list goes on.
