FOLLOWING THE LEAD OF ITS GOLDEN -- arched rival, Burger King Corp. has just adopted new animal handling guidelines governing the care and slaughter of the cattle, swine and poultry used to make its Whoppers and other food products. The Miami-based company says its guidelines, which were influenced by standards by the American Meat Institute (AMI), National Chicken Council (NCC) and United Egg Producers (UEP), are the toughest in the industry and will be enforced through scheduled and unscheduled audits of its suppliers. Good for Burger King.
Not content to rest on its laurels, however, the burger-maker is also petitioning USDA to do a better job of enforcing the federal Humane Slaughter Act (HSA) to ensure that other meatpackers are likewise toeing the line....
