State Legislatures, January, 2007
New Jersey is the first state to require doctors to educate expectant mothers and their families about postpartum depression and to screen new mothers for the disorder. While most new mothers experience occasional "baby blues," 10 percent to 15 percent suffer postpartum depression, a more serious condition that experts say should be treated through therapy, group support and/or medication.
Several other states have launched awareness campaigns. New Jersey has around 115,000 births a year.
