The physician-owned medical malpractice insurance business is consolidating. Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Co. is acquiring Fortress Insurance Company of America from AAOMS National Insurance Company while PICOM Insurance Company is merging with Physicians Protective Trust Fund. The mergers and acquisitions are being driven by the perception that a larger size will enhance an insurer's competitiveness through economies of scale and regional expansion.
