The proposed merger of Catholic Health Initiatives and Mercy Health Services to create Mercy Health Network will create a system of seven acute-care hospitals with management contracts at another 23 hospitals that will rank as one of the two biggest in the state of Iowa. The merger is part of the ongoing consolidation of the healthcare industry in Iowa.

Hospital consolidation in Iowa and Nebraska is a horse race with providers jockeying for better position.

The contest continued last week when two of the largest Roman Catholic healthcare systems announced plans to consolidate their Iowa operations under a joint operating company by July 1.
