PhyCor, a Nashville-based physician practice management company, is a potential buyer for UniMed Management Co., the medical group division of Burbank, Calif.-based UniHealth, sources said late last week. Word of PhyCor's interest in the 7,100-physician group came the same week as PhyCor's announced plans to buy a physician practice management company serving southern California (See story, p. 17). The capital-strapped UniMed has been considered a likely takeover candidate since late last year (Nov. 3, 1997, p. 34). UniHealth confirmed in a written statement that it is seeking a strategic partner for UniMed, but a spokeswoman declined further comment.
