A new revenue source;Calif. hospitals seek to recoup costs through sharing in personal injury awards; lawyers cry foul.

In their hunt for cash, California hospitals have targeted an unlikely source of revenue: personal injury awards. Their quest has inflamed the state's trial lawyers, who accuse hospitals of poaching money that rightly belongs to accident victims. In February, ScrippsHealth in San Diego won a small victory when a local judge ruled that the system can place liens on settlements or court awards that patients receive to cover medical costs, even if a patient's health plan has already paid the bill.
