Fierce competition among five Twin Cities health systems vying to build a suburban hospital ended last week with two winners and gave fuel to critics who say Minnesota must revamp its hospital construction process.

North Memorial Health Care, Robbinsdale, and Fairview Health Services, Minneapolis, won approval March 20 from Minnesota's Senate for a joint bid to build an 80- to 120-bed hospital in Maple Grove, a fast-growing Minneapolis suburb.
