Forum Health's decision to negotiate a sale to for-profit Community Health Systems last week came as Forum is poised to end its financial red ink.

But the system's improved financial position apparently isn't enough to allow it to compete with two hospitals that are part of Catholic Healthcare Partners, Cincinnati.

On Aug. 22, the board overseeing Youngstown, Ohio-based Forum Health signed a nonbinding letter of intent to negotiate and sell two acute-care hospitals, a children's hospital, rehabilitation hospital and other businesses to Brentwood, Tenn.-based Community Health, which operates 76 hospitals in 22 states.
