Turning to the insight he gained as the chairman of not-for-profit boards of trustees, William Schubart III steered 434-bed Fletcher Allen Health Care to an open and accountable decisionmaking process-the antithesis of a secretive style that had led to several years of tumult at the organization.

Schubart, 61, served a four-year term on the board of Burlington, Vt.-based Fletcher Allen, from December 2002 to December 2006, becoming chairman in December 2003.
