BOCA RATON, Fla.-The Schmidt Family Foundation donated $75 million toward a $650 million academic medical center to be built by the 380-bed Boca Raton Community Hospital at Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus. The 530-bed replacement hospital, to be named the Charles E. Schmidt Medical Center, will be a teaching hospital for the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, a spokeswoman said. Construction is slated to begin in 2008 and end in 2011. Public Florida Atlantic and not-for-profit Boca Raton Community Hospital separately approved the construction in late June, which will be financed from donations, borrowing and Boca Raton Community Hospital operations, the two organizations said in statements.
