Veteran HHS employee Kerry Weems is selected by President Bush to head the CMS. The nomination of Weems, who became acting administrator after the departure of acting Administrator Leslie Norwalk, becomes stalled in the Senate, with no confirmation vote as of year's end.

Retired Lt. Gen. James Peake, the U.S. Army's former senior medical officer, is the first physician to be nominated for head of the Veterans Affairs Department. The Senate confirms his appointment in mid-December.
