Two Catholic health systems start 2008 moving forward with plans to shuffle their assets. Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, Lenexa, Kan., cleared a potential hurdle in a disputed bid to become the sole sponsor of Exempla Healthcare in Denver, dissolving a joint-operating agreement forged 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, St. Louis-based SSM Health Care's St. Louis division announced it would group its six hospitals into two regional groups and establish distinct leadership for five service lines.

In Colorado, Attorney General John Suthers said on Dec. 27, 2007, that he would not stop the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth from paying $311 million to buy out Exempla's co-sponsor, the Community First Foundation....
