Southern Methodist University's Public Safety Dept. initiated a security audit program after a campus custodian discovered on Mar. 30, 1995 that a 30-year-old tramp had been living for several months inside its Arts Center. The risk assessment audit, which entails a preaudit and postaudit interview with building managers, has been carried out for 15 of the university's 64 buildings as of Oct. 1995.

A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD WOULD-BE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA HAD BEEN LIVING UNDETECTED IN A LITTLE-USED SOUND BOOTH IN THE ARTS CENTER.

By day, the 450,000-square-foot Arts Center at Southern Methodist University was home to students of dance, theater, music, and art history. By night, only the spirits of the Muses roamed its dark corridors and empty stages. Or so it was thought....
