Wash day can be a drag not only for whoever gets stuck doing the laundry but also for the environment, given the waste that it produces. But Genencor, a Rochester, New York based biotechnology company, has put a new spin on this age-old chore with a process that uses special enzymes to make detergent generate fewer harmful phosphates. Protecting the information behind that process--just one of hundreds that Genencor has developed to improve a range of products--is a constant challenge for management.
