The United States faces a growing shortage of information security professionals, warns Dr. Eugene Spafford, director of Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS). For example, out of the 23 best-known programs in information security across the country, a total of only 20 Ph.D.s have been awarded in the past three years, and few of those graduating have been interested in university faculty positions, Spafford recently told the Science Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, which held a hearing on the state of national cybersecurity efforts.
