European shrink expands. (News and Trends).(findings of "The European Retail Theft Barometer")

Oscar Wilde famously quipped that England has everything in common with America, except language. One of those commonalities these days is the rate of retail loss (which the industry calls shrink) from a combination of shoplifting, employee theft, vendor fraud, and accounting errors. That's one of the findings in "The European Retail Theft Barometer," a study that was conducted by the Nottingham, England-based Centre for Retail Research (CRR) and funded by Checkpoint Systems Europe.

On average, retail shrink is on the rise through all of Western Europe, the report concludes. Shrinkage has increased by 5 percent since the CRR conducted its first study last year, according to Professor Jonathan Bamfield of the CRR, who spearheaded the study.
